Funny how I can be perturbed last week at people trying to call this song the summer jam of 2011 but this week when The Knocks remix it I'm awfully eager to post it. Call me a hypocrite, it's cool. I'm only doing it because I posted this song exactly a year ago today. I know that because I thought it was a fitting song to post on the day of the Boston Marathon. Since it just so happens to be Marathon Monday today, I figured why the hell not, just for old time's sake. Plus The Knocks give it a new life and you can download it for free. I think "Living in America" could blow up this summer with a little refinement. By "refinement" I mean this: while lots of indie fans adore the distortion in songs like this one, it doesn't get songs the popularity it deserves outside of the indie community, take out some distortion and you have a hit. If by chance a noteworthy DJ gets their hands on this and kicks it up a notch it is the soundtrack to our summer. This is also how I feel about Foster the People's "Pumped up Kicks" song. It has a great beat, a catchy chorus, and lots of lo-fi hipster loving potential. Who doesn't want to sing along with "It's so sexy to be living in America?"....ok lots of people, I know, but still it's a fun song. DOM is a Worchester, Massachusetts band but the funny thing is that I found it on a Danish music blog under the title "Sexy to be livin' in Massachusetts". Their album, Sun Bronzed Greek Gods, was surprisingly enjoyable with songs like "I wonder", "Burn Bridges", and "Jesus". Happy Marathon Monday and Happy Patriots Day. If you aren't in Massachusetts...happy monday? If you are just stuck celebrating Monday don't worry this is a fun song, with marathon related lyrics (kind of): "All the other kids with the pumped up kicks, you better run, better run, faster than my bullet." Foster the People's song is oddly intriguing. I came across it on another blog and the author said he thought that it was a perfect summer tune and really liked it. When I first listened to it, I had no idea what that guy was talking about except that the chorus is pretty catchy. It could be perfect for a morbid shoe commercial (I have the marathon on my mind). Who wouldn't want to run faster than a bullet? They don't even have an EP yet, just this catchy little tune for free out on the world wide web. While the lo-fi verses lack any sort of pizzaz, the chorus makes up for it. It also features some fun whistling and solid beats that might make you think of Miike Snow's "Song for No One" and Peter Bjorn & John's "Young Folks".
