Every once in a while we need to indulge our should've beens that wake us up in the middle of the night and it's always best, like any event, to have a soundtrack for that. Here's my current one which probably makes little sense, or maybe it's showing all my cards because it's highly personal, but the songs are great whether you're attached to them or not.

Almost, Always, All Yours Mix
I assumed it was the trucks outside that suddenly woke me, but as I listened to their grunting engines the familiar pain set in and I knew I was widely awake because I'd dreamt about him again. The nice part about having a friend on the opposite coast is that you can text them at 4am and get a response, he called back and we talked. We haven't been together in years but have been good at talking weekly for half a decade now, despite living multiple continents apart at times. But things have suddenly changed, as they are wont to do right before you are about to pack up your life in order to make things perfect again. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" he almost whispered "me too" I whispered back before he hung up. We texted each other the same thing right after, there were four and a half years of apologies we'd been holding back. Sometimes sorry is the only word you have left.

Winter, Maybe Mix
The past few years I've done anti-holiday cheer mixes for all of those christmas carol haters. I also put together mixes of indie holiday songs that are bearable. This year I'm too sick and overwhelmed with music to go through the absurd amounts of holiday songs that we'll all soon forget.
So instead, there's this: some vaguely winter themed songs. Some are happy, some are less so, and some are there because I like them. There'll be another winter mix to look forward to further down the line. It's up to you to download and enjoy.

Don't Haunt Me Mix
Here's a little well known secret: I detest the costume portion of Halloween to the point where I haven't had a costume since high school. However, as long as there are Midnight Milky Ways I'm ok with the candy part. I also like pumpkins and scooping out the guts in case you were wondering. The other part I especially like are the mixes that come out of working around a spooky theme. I'm just as excited about this year's mix as the previous two.
Stream all three mixes in one playlist on spotify. Of course it's missing some of my favorite songs due to the usual spotify issues, but that's why I reuploaded the old playlists so you can download all three.

The Winter That Isn't Mix
I hope that in making this I jinx the mild 40 degree weather and we can finally get some snow. But for the time being, it looks like this is the winter global warming made. I like my seasons to be distinct, thank you very much. I've come to expect winter mixes to be sparse, pretty, and down tempo. As I made my own, I realized it was more in tune with my restless temperament and the current weather than that gorgeous silence a fresh snowfall brings. Hope you enjoy it, whatever the weather may be.

Dancing in the Graveyard Mixtape
There were plenty of graveyard themed songs to choose from this year and it just so happened to fit right in this 16 song and 60 minute long mix. The bands featured are worth a serious look especially ones like Jared Mees, Veronica Falls, Feist, Ravenna Woods, Radical Face, and Chad VanGaalen who all released terrific albums this year. If you want more ghostly goodness in song format, last year's Songs About Ghosts mix had some of my favorite songs on it and got played year round, download it here. Without further rambling, put on your best costume and go dancing. Bonus points for actually dancing in a graveyard.

Brightest Days / Sleepless Nights Mixtape
"All of your city lights turn your brightest days into sleepless nights" sings Other Lives in their song "Desert" which I couldn't legally include here, but there have been many days that I play the song just to hear those words. Taken out of context, I find myself relating those sleepless nights to some of the restless anxiety ridden ones, and other times it makes me think of missing the last subway home and enjoying the long walk home after a successful night out, the summer breeze flirting with the hem of my dress. Both scenarios encapsulate the meaning of this mix. It's not a summer mix, but rather one that characterizes the summer I've been having. It isn't the carefree summer I remember from my college years, as I'm slowly grappling and struggling to accept this "real world" I've landed in. There have been ups and downs, moments of absurdly goofy fun, long days at the beach with the best of friends, and moments spent screaming along to songs in my car just as a form of relief. This mix has songs to get lost in, songs that make you more aware than ever of the cracks in your heart, and more than a few to make you smile, maybe even laugh. Here are some of my favorite bits:
1. Ambassadors - Unconsolable [bandcamp]
2. The Middle East - Jesus Came to my Birthday Party [website]
3. Girls - Vomit [facebook]
4. Real Estate - It's Real [website]
5. Dum Dum Girls - Coming Down [website]
6. Beat Radio - Teenage Anthem for the Drunken Boat [bandcamp]
7. TV Girl - Lizzy Come Back to Life [bandcamp]
8. Stone Darling - I Stopped Missing You Today [bandcamp]
9. The Antlers - I Don't Want Love [website]
10. Beirut - East Harlem [website]
11. Fruit Bats - You're Too Weird [website]
12. Cataldo - Rock of Calvary [bandcamp]
13. He's My Brother She's My Sister - How'm I Gonna Get Back Home [bandcamp]
14. The Local Strangers - For Fear of Losing [bandcamp]
15. Family of the Year - Let's Go Down [website]
16. Aunt Martha - Neighbor Song [website]
17. Other Lives - For 12 [website]
18. Neighbors - Watergun [website]
19. Portugal. The Man - Got it All (This Can't Be Living Now) [website]
20. TV Girl - Benny and the Jetts
21. Allo Darlin' - My Heart is a Drummer [website]
22. Caroline Smith & The Good Night Sleeps - Tanktop [website]
23. Aunt Martha - North
24. Blitzen Trapper - American Goldwing [website]
I honestly mean it when I say that each and every one of their albums/eps are highly recommended. So you better click away on those links, there's lots more wonderful songs to discover. Enjoy.
- The first five songs are just insanely good and ones that have been on repeat all week. "Unconsolable" is my new favorite confusing hook up song.
- I'm excited about a new album from Beat Radio and love when he sings "I made you a mixtape, ok it's not a tape at all, but it's full of sad songs that make summer feel like fall."
- Then there's the TV Girl EP that you'd be crazy not to get, especially since it's free. When this song comes on, the image of a topless girl with an indian headdress laying by the pool always floats to the surface. When you listen, you'll understand.
- Stone Darling is the latest 7" release from Analog Edition. What I love about this song is if you're writing a song about not missing someone, you probably are. But we've all been there, right?
- If you haven't cranked The Antlers "I don't want love" at 3am on repeat for an hour straight, you're seriously missing out, and also your neighbors probably don't hate you like mine do.
- "How'm I Gonna Get Back Home" is an absolute jam about a wild night spent over-imbibing.
- Aunt Martha is easily my new favorite band. "And quit your job that you hate so much / We'll both get by / We'll both make love / and you're here tonight, anyway / but oh, how things have changed / Now I act my age." Get their Abandoned Bedroom Sessions for free from their website.
- Allo Darlin' has been the soundtrack of my past two summers. I love the tweeness, how I can see the smoke coming from his cigarette, the frank lyrics, the image of a girl twisting a phone cord around her fingers. And god damn, I am so in love with that bass that kicks in at the end.
- "American Goldwing" is the title track of Blitzen Trapper's latest album due out in September and a perfect closing track.

Bluegrass for Beginners
While every other blogger is busy posting the new Girls track (which is awesome even though I'm not a huge fan their last album) or the M83 song (less than awesome), and whatever else is generating a buzz, all I can think about and listen to at the moment are bluegrass tunes. If Bluegrass was a season, it'd be summer. It is best enjoyed outside, preferably near a river and a campfire. Recently, I've been voluntarily taking heavy aural doses of mandolin and banjo. I had a hard time resisting doing a jig while waiting for a train when my favorite Trampled by Turtles song came up on shuffle. What I'm poorly trying to say is that this weather/music combo is perfection. Not to mention the summer always brings multitudes of cheap (as in free) and enjoyable folk/bluegrass festivals. I happen to have fond memories from childhood of my mom dragging my sister and I to some local festivals. Sure, it was the first time I saw women with armpit hair, but it was a healthy dose of something new and different and some of the first live music I ever saw which might explain my obsession with the combination of fiddle, mandolin, and banjo.

The Rapture or Something...
Just in case you weren't yet tired of the never ending joke that is the predicted Rapture, here are some tunes to keep you going. "These are the days of miracles and wonder, and don't cry baby, don't cry" say's Paul Simon who made it on the mix simply because I've been listening to Graceland way too much recently. "It's the end of the world and I feel fine" (i'm so glad people can finally use this song literally). Elvis Perkins with possibly the most upbeat celebration song on the mix says "But I don't let doomsday bother me / Does it bother you?" and the mix carries on. Just as we all will. At least the rapture jokes kept friday entertaining. Enjoy and be back on Sunday.

MIXTAPE: It's Always Spring in College
I made a mix for my sister who likes country, hip hop, and anything she can blast during dorm parties. Making a mix she likes is no easy task and I usually try and hide indie songs that I like between songs she likes. This mix sounds like spring time in college and it makes me miss the days of campus golf, bbqs and kegs in the park, frats blasting music on the quad, crazy dangerous slip n' slides, and nights of endless fun with all my friends. It's 60% stuff I wouldn't post on the blog but it's nice to listen to something completely different from time to time. You can listen to the shuffled 8 tracks version or if you go to my facebook page you might just find a download link for the mix.

Be Mine, You Sad Bastard Mixtape
Looks like a good mixtape huh? Well you can only get it if you become a follower of the facebook page. You'll find the .zip file on facebook. Go get it.
This isn't your Elliot Smith kind of sad bastard mixtape. No, it's more of an angry mix that makes you want to shout along until it tapers off into a dismal spiral of the many types of failed relationships until it gets topped off with a smidgen of compassion and optimism at the end. It seems to be a real representation of the way things tend to go. The mixtape takes you from the raw emotion of track 2's lyrics "So I'll take true love, and I'll cut it up with scissors, and I'll throw it in the fireplace" to the sad realization on track 8 that "only one thing's certain, that's everybody, everybody's hurting" and then to Dr. Dog's uplifting song, "We're all in it together now, cause we all fall apart, we're swapping little pieces of our broken little hearts." I hope you enjoy it from the little pieces of my heart to yours.

Anti-Holiday Cheer Mixtape
Yesterday, I was held against my will in a dentist chair and tortured for a full hour by the sounds of the most heinous Christmas carols out there, and it was only December first. I am not prepared for the onslaught of songs about joy, peace on earth, or the Muppets singing 12 days of Christmas. Don't get me wrong, I like the occasional carol from about the 22nd-25th of December, but that's all I can take.
By the time I escaped Christmas carol hell I was overwhelmed with urges to:
I desperately needed to balance out the Christmas carols with something more...somber. In the likely event that the Christmas carols will start grating on our nerves (if they haven't already), I made you this mixtape. I selected the most anti-holiday cheer lyrics from each song as well. So here you still have the December/Winter theme but with a healthy dose of heartache, depression, and reality. Happy Holidays! (Click the album art to download the ZIP) Warning: This is not a mix for those with seasonal depression disorder.
1. The Decemberists - Down By the Water "The season rubs me wrong"
2. Said The Whale - This Winter I retire "The snow begins just like I remember/ Looks like it's going to be another cold, long December."
3. Lost In The Trees - Fireplace "So I take true love and I cut it up with scissors/ and I'll throw it in the fireplace."
4. Peggy Sue - February Snow "Hit me with the cold"
5. Frightened Rabbit - Keep Yourself Warm "It takes more than fucking someone you don't know to keep warm."
6. Mumford & Sons - Winter Winds "Was it love or fear of the cold that led us through the night?"
7. Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal "you would fall and turn the white snow red as strawberries."
8. Nina Simone - Gin House Blues "I don't want no pork chops and green / just give me gin instead"
9. Meiko - Maybe Next Year (Christmas Song) "I don't think Santa is coming this year cause I've been a bad, a bad girl."
10. Balmorhea - The Winter Instrumental Interlude
11. Rachael Yamagata - The River "They're putting up reindeer and singing songs of joy and peace / Oh I wish I had a river to skate away on."
12. Bill Ricchini - A Cold Wind Will Blow Through Your Door "I wrote in a small note, put on your winter coat a cold wind will blow through your door."
13. Slow Club - Christmas TV "Hoping something might grow out of this mistletoe."
14. Belle & Sebastian - I Want The World to Stop "I'm wrapped in sheets of milky winter disorder."
15. Noah and the Whale - Blue Skies "This is a song for anyone with a broken heart."
16. Brooke Waggoner - Hush if you Must "Not very adequate, not very merry, oh I try."
17. Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson "This is my winter song. December never felt so wrong / cause you're not where you belong."
18. Sufjan Stevens - Did I Make You Cry On Christmas Day? (Well You Deserved It)
19. Say Hi - November Was White, December Was Grey "I'll feel better when winter's gone."
20. Emancipator - First Snow

Sleepier Times Mixtape
This is my sleepy time mix, I was making it last night and even though I drank a large iced coffee at 6pm I had fallen alseep on the couch by 10. Like I tell the kids I made this for, "I have songs that magically put you to sleep." Guess I was right. Keep in mind that I made this mix for little kids under the age of five and is partially based on what songs they fall asleep to when driving around in my car. So the beginning of the cd is a little bit more fun/kid friendly (but still indie and totally suited for adults) and then I figure at the halfway point kids should be asleep so a few darker songs get added to the mix. I tried to keep the overall theme quiet and peaceful, yet positive, to induce sleep with the magical power of songs. Download is only available through the weekend. Click the link at the end to download the zip file.

Listen Local the Boston Music Scene
My goal is to help local bands achieve the recognition that they deserve on a local and hopefully national level. Boston is a musically diverse city with all sorts of different shows being played on any given night. The more time I have spent going to concerts, the more I have been impressed and surprised by the talent that is hidden among us here in Boston. Hopefully I can help showcase some of what I have experienced.
Lastly, as this project is a work in progress, (and something I am doing for free and because I love music) if you could help spread the word or if you want to help out, I would really appreciate it. You can reach me via e-mail (jessnewmusicco [at] gmail) or on Twitter.
- If you are a band and would like to be a part of this please e-mail me or find me on twitter.
- If you have a reccomendation for me about a band let me know
- If you are a designer or artist and want to do the cover art for this, it would be a huge help.
- Anybody else, comments, questions, and feedback are all greatly appreciated.

Best Bloggerin' Week Ever #1 [MIXTAPE]
This is a completely mixed up mixtape consisting of songs from the summer with a few older tunes thrown in to celebrate "The Best Bloggerin' Week Ever". It is essentially a weird combination of favorite songs from the past year-ish, leaving out a lot of obvious ones, mixed with this month's new favorites.
This week I redesigned the blog, added the media player, spent some hard earned cash on a file storage site, created some new accounts, added some fancy buttons, did some HTML magic, and threw out some ideas for collaborations and new features. The best part was getting feedback from all of you almost instantly. I made new twitter acquaintances, even one new BEST friend, and made contact with some cool and influential music people that will help me bring some really cool stuff to the blog in the future. It was just one of those weeks where everything just goes surprisingly well, and I want to celebrate that with a mixtape. Thank you to everyone who makes me love this hobby more and more every day. And a big massive thank you to all the musicians out there, if I was without you I'd be a crippled excuse of a human being. Enjoy!
(You can right/ctrl click to dl the songs. Or just click to play. The new media player will let you play this as a playlist so you can just minimize this site and let it play through while at your computer. Files will deactivate Friday night. Get it while you can.)

Tift Merritt - Mixtape
I hope you are all looking forward to a Mixtape Monday. I have been working hard on a mixtape of covers. I am narrowing down the list of 70 songs right now. But in between working on all of that, this song has a tendency of popping up out of nowhere, on the radio, or on my ipod and the lyrics stick in my head.
"I’ll be making you mixtapes with homemade covers.
Analog to show we’re lovers,
So much rock and roll love in a plastic case,
Play it loudly, see my face.
I’m just making you mixtapes with homemade covers,
Mazzy Star, Donovan’s Colors,
Just an audio love letter painted blue,
I spent all day making for you."
It has been a long time, five years, since I made a mixtape that had a not so subtle meaning in it, that I was hoping someone would be smart enough to figure out (he did). Now, when I hear a song that was on that mixtape, my heart twitches a little thinking of how cowardly I was to let that mix speak the volumes of things I could never bring myself to say to his face. I haven't made a mixtape like that since, but the first time I heard this song I thought of the time I took to craft that cd and the careful selection process of songs. Anyway, I like to think that a lot of us have, at one point or another, made mixes like that, in hopes that the person on the recieving end would know well enough to read into the songs and pay attention to the lyrics. Tift Merritt's song details this so well, that I know I am not alone in making a mixtape with my heart taped to the cover. And it really is a great song too.

The World Cup Goes Indie
Official Website
In case you haven't heard of this tremendous mixtape of 32 songs representing each country playing in 2010's World Cup, here it is:
"Fast Forward is our most ambitious project to date and it has taken over a year to come to fruition. The premise was simple; we asked some of our favourite bands to write about one of the 32 countries participating in South Africa 2010, the only stipulation being that the song be themed on their chosen country and if possible be football related. As you can imagine this definition was interpreted in about 32 different ways but the results are as colourful, imaginative and exciting as the event they will be used to showcase."
The mixtape is broken up by each group making it easy to find any of the countries you are looking for. Please use the link above to learn more about this impressive project. Below are two free mp3s (available for downloading) found on the mixtape, both are fun songs.
MP3: Grand Pocket Orchestra - Nigeria
MP3: Le Man Avec Les Lunettes - Don't get fooled by the football players' summery outfit

This blog is going down the shitter so I stole you this little nugget of gold...
Check this out from another Boston blogger, Music Savage. It's a good representation of last month's hits. Find your new favorite songs here. I have been playing Sleigh Bells' "Rill Rill" (formerly "Ring Ring") for way too many days now, and my new favorite is the Michael Trent song. In fact, I downloaded this mix just for that song, and it was very much worth it. Enjoy the tunes! Be sure to check out his site at http://musicsavage.com/

"Laurel?! We're Getting Married!" Playlist
One of my oldest and dearest friends and fellow blogger, Jackie, got engaged on the now monumental day of March 12th and I couldn’t control my excitement for her, for them, and for their future. This is my first really good friend to be engaged and I was blown away by how happy her happiness made me, I’m kind of ecstatic and emotional right now so I turned to my music. I have been compiling some lists for friends and engagements/weddings/marriage type things for a while now so this seems like the appropriate time to share the short indie version of this list.In real life I would include a lot more of the obvious songs, but this way it keeps it short and interesting. Enjoy!
This is one of the weirder things I will ever admit to on this site: I have to start it off with one of the five Bruce Springsteen songs I like, mainly because of the Jerry Maguire quotes in it. I have listened to this so many times (mostly in high school) that I subconsciously try to make friends with people named Laurel so that I can one day say (with a perfect Rene Zellweger voice), “Laurel?! We’re getting married!” (2:16 mark) I just love the way she sounds for some reason. I quote this line at the most inappropriate times and no one ever gets the reference, I am awkward like that. So whenever I hear about engagements I automatically think of people saying "Laurel?! We're getting married!" to their sisters. No idea what I am talking about? Watch this video about 50 times and maybe, just maybe, you'll get it...I just really needed to share that. k. thanks.
Jessica's Indie(ish) Congratulations Mixtape...with commentary*
*Guys you have been warned, this is probably a mix that is more for the ladies' taste in music. Sorry.
1. Joshua Radin - Today Ellen Degeneres picked this as her wedding song and it doesn't get much better than this. listen here
2. Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers - Diamond every time my friend Megan hears this she says she wants it to be played at her wedding, good choice. listen here
3. Tristan Prettyman - Simple as it should be in case you are separated by physical distance from the one you love. listen here
4. Ben Taylor - Nothing I can do This song makes you want to be in love, even if your heart is made of stone. listen here.
5. Sleeping At Last - Umbrellas Because everyone needs to be told "you were meant for amazing things" beautiful lyrics. listen here
6. Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors - Hung the Moon I must have listened to this song 10 times before I realized it mentioned a white dress, but I listened to it 10 times because it is just that good, also great simple lyrics. Listen here (you will have to click on the player to get to the song) This is my new favorite song.
7. Brett Dennen - She's Mine this is adorable and I know Jackie will love this one. Listen Here.
8. Ray LaMontagne - You are the Best Thing this song will play at my hypothetical wedding ergo it should play at yours, totally logical. Listen Here.
9. Sia - Not a Day too Soon sometimes you need perfect timing to make love work. This is also totally a bedroom song in a Sade kind of way Listen Here.
10. Teitur ft. Nolwenn Leroy - One and Only involuntary sighs occur when you listen to this song. Listen here
11. Nicki Bluhm - Danny's Song a decent cover, I just love this song though. Listen here. (this is a link to the original)
12. The Beatles - When I'm Sixty Four of all the Beatles' songs I could have picked I don't know why I settled on this one, just deal with it. Listen here.
13. The Wind Whistles - Ballad of a Jailbreak Wedding because it is the best story of wedding day drama and you just need something silly after all of that emotion! Listen here. Download for FREE their entire awesome and fantastic album here. Best free album download I have ever come across.
And with that, Congratulations! I am so happy for the both of you times a million!
